Description: The female has a spotted brown body with blue patch on wings.  White tail parts and orange feet. Brown buffy colored streak from beak atop of eye. The male can be recognized by its beautiful glossy green head, white neck band, and rusty colored breast.

Sound: Not yet available

Food Source:  Mallards are primarily vegetarians who eat various seeds including corn,  barley, bulrushes, wild rice, wheat, hackberry, primrose, willow, seeds of water elm, oak, and other trees of swamps or river bottoms. Mallards will also eat some mollusks, insects, small fish, tadpoles, freshwater snails and fish eggs.

Where there is water, they will come. I have a 20 X 25' pond only 2' deep (primarily for goldfish and frogs) and I occasionally see Mr. and Mrs. Mallard swimming about.

Nesting Habits: The mallard's nest is usually built on the ground among  reeds, edges of lakes, dead grasses, reservoirs, on muskrat houses, in marshes or marshy ground and sometimes away from the water on higher ground.
