Description: The head is white with a black stripe on each side extending back from the yellow eyes to slender black plumes. Their back is grayish blue and the breast is white streaked with black. In flight, the neck is doubled back and the head rests against the shoulders Yearling Herons have gray crowns and gray wings flecked with brown.

Sound: Not yet available, but one of my favorite morning sounds!

Food Source: The Great Blue Heron feeds mainly on small fish less than half the length of its bill. Insects, rodents, amphibians, shellfish, reptiles, and small birds are also occasionally eaten.

This Heron was seen in my 20 X 23' goldfish pond, only being 2' deep... He must've been hungry!

Nesting Habits: Nests look like delicate platforms of interlaced dry branches, and older nests are bulky structures of different sizes.  The internal cavity is sometimes lined with twigs, moss, conifer needles or lichens,.

Great Blue Herons normally nest near the tree tops. In colonies made up of several species, they normally take possession of the top of the tree.
