Description:

Medium-sized woodpecker with black head traversed by white post ocular stripe extending down the neck, red forehead, pale moustachial stripe offsets black chest and complete, thick black border to the throat black back with faint white bars. Yellow breast fades to whitish lower belly and vent, and is streaked sparsely about the flanks, dark tail with black and white barring on central most and outermost feathers

Sound: Not yet available

Food Source:  Sapsuckers drill  rows of tiny holes in trees for sap. They mostly eat plant matter and small amounts of insects, larvae and fruit.

Nesting Habits: Sapsucker nests are built in cavities in large aspen trees. The holes are almost perfectly round with brown oil stains below the hole. This is caused by oils from the adult sapsucker's tail smearing the bark as they support themselves while pecking at the hole.
