Waxwing:
Description: 7 1/4" brownish bird on back.chest and head, crown is brown as well. Yellowish stomach, and tip on tail. Black mask, outlined in white. Black throat. Wings have gray appearance to back of tail turning a darker black. Wings also have a small bright red patch. Sound: Not yet available anyone have one? Food Source: Waxwings eat insects such as elm leaf beetles, weevils, carpenter ants, and especially cankerworms. They also enjoy berries, flower petals, and sap. I find them in my crabapple tree eating fermented winter berries. Some flower petal favorites include apple and pecan trees. Very young nestlings eat insects, but within a few days cherries or berries are added to their diet. Nesting Habits: Females lay 3-5 pale gray or blue-gray, black or dark brown spotted eggs. The young are fed to some extent on small fruits, thus encouraging the waxwings to nest late in the summer when there is a n abundant supply of berries. The nest consists of twigs, dry grasses, weed stalks, mosses, lichens, pine needles, & wool. Adults have been known to robbing material from other birds abandoned nests. Cedar waxwings will sometimes become so tame during nesting season, it will come to your hand for pieces of yarn and has even been known to pluck hairs from humans to line their nest.
